Count the Stars, Protect the Night.

In partnership with the Wilderness Society, we’re helping explorers count the stars and protect Tasmania’s dark skies.

Inspire Your Adventure, Protect the Night.

Your campervan adventure isn’t just about seeing Tasmania — it’s about making a difference. Every night spent under the stars gives you the chance to contribute to real citizen science, helping map and protect the Southwest Sky Country.

By joining this star-counting initiative, you’ll experience the wonder of pristine night skies, connect deeply with nature, and leave a lasting impact on Tasmania’s wilderness. Your journey can inspire others, support conservation, and help ensure these magical skies remain for generations to come.

Why it Matters?

Tasmania’s Southwest Sky Country is one of the last truly dark places in the world, and protecting its night skies is vital. Dark skies are essential for ecosystems, as many species rely on natural light–dark cycles, and they hold deep cultural and Indigenous significance, connecting to milaythina wurangkili / liwari (Sky Country / night). Light pollution not only disrupts wildlife but also diminishes the experience of wilderness and erodes important baseline data.

The Wilderness Society’s Eyes on the Sky citizen science campaign is gathering these baseline measurements, and by participating, you can help safeguard night skies for future generations while supporting conservation, science, tourism, and cultural heritage.

How does it work?

1. Book your campervan
Any Campervan at any time of the year is eligible to join this initiative.

2. Upon Pickup, collect our Star Counter Device
It weights about 200g and can easily fit into the glove box and has a battery of several weeks.

3. Camp & Measure

As you roadtrip around Tasmania, point your device to the skies, read and collect the data for us to transmit it to the Wilderness Society on your behalf.
